Defensive signing could be next after Grant joins

Grant, 20, who spent a spell on loan at SPL side Motherwell last term, has joined on a month’s loan and is set to make his debut in Saturday’s League One home encounter with Colchester United.

After witnessing his side concede some pitiful goals en route to league defeats to Peterborough United and Millwall, Ferguson is now working on boosting his back-four options and says the arrival of a newcomer ahead of tomorrow’s game is possible.

Grant, who has been with Everton since the age of 13, was an unused substitute for the Toffees in their Europa League game with Krasnodar last December and signed a new one-year deal last summer.

On the left-sided midfielder, Ferguson said: “He’s a player I know well. From my discussions with (Everton manager) Roberto Martinez, we felt it would be a really good fit for the boy.

“He’s a good footballer, good size and he’s got a lovely left foot on him.

“He’ll understand straight away how we want to play because we try and play a similar way as Everton do in terms of between the lines and the thirds of the pitch.

“He has played wide on the left, but it would be more as a narrow midfielder (here). I wouldn’t really class him as a winger.”

Speaking about his move, Grant added: “I have been trying to get out on loan now for a few months and trying to play well for the Under-21s.

“It happened that on Monday, they (Doncaster) were watching me and obviously saw something they liked and I appreciate that and now I want to do well for Doncaster.

“The manager likes to play a good brand of football and a nice attacking style. I think that will suit me and Everton was more than happy for me to come and develop.”

Loan striker Keshi Anderson could return to training today following a foot injury, which has forced him to miss the club’s last two games.

The Crystal Palace forward has made a sizeable impression during his time at the Keepmoat Stadium, netting three times in five appearances, with his haul including a late winning goal at Shrewsbury Town.

Anderson’s loan was recently extended until January 2.
