The 40-year-old former Scotland international resigned as manager of Oldham at the start of February having been under pressure at Boundary Park following poor league form, earning a brief stay of execution after masterminding a famous FA Cup fourth-round victory over Liverpool.

He had been in charge of the Latics since June 2010 and won 43 of 141 games.

A statement on Rovers’ official website read: “An 18 point criteria was set to identify the best possible candidate for the role. These criteria covered a whole range of aspects of the club in addition to the football.

“After completing the interview process, the board were in agreement that Paul was the best person to put their plans into action.”
