It came in the 86th minute when he held off Mason Holgate, cut inside and curled the ball beyond former Rovers goalkeeper Ross Turnbull into the left-hand corner of the net.

Holgate’s misery was complete when he was red-carded for a late challenge on Richie Wellens in the last minute of stoppage time.

Rovers had the better of the first half with Theo Robinson twice being off target at the near post and strike partner Curtis Main bundling wide a driven cross from James Coppinger and testing Turnbull with a long-range drive.

Debutant Rovers goalkeeper Stephen Bywater was tested just once by Dale Jennings’s ambitious attempt from long range.

Rovers continued to look the more likely side to score after the break but Turnbull did well to block a close-range effort from Coppinger before Forrester, who had been placed on the bench due to ankle trouble, came on to grab the three points.
