Doncaster Rovers are relishing underdog status, insists manager Grant McCann

DONCASTER ROVERS manager Grant McCann believes his side are relishing their underdog status ahead of Sunday's League One semi-final first leg against Charlton Athletic at the Keepmoat Stadium (12.15pm).

Rovers, who occupied the final place in the top six, finished 15 points behind the third-placed Addicks, one or three former Premier League sides in the play-offs alongside Portsmouth and Sunderland.

Rated at 5-1 on to go down by some bookmakers before a ball was kicked in August, McCann's men have made a mockery of that statistic and are now fully focussed on upsetting the odds in the end-of-season lottery.

McCann said: "We have been underdogs right from minute one. Again, everybody will not fancy us and has written us off already before a ball has even been kicked.

"We got no chance...That in itself is motivation for us and I love it when our backs are against the wall and people do not give us any chance. We are in these play-offs with three ex-Premier League teams and some so-called pundits probably have not seen us play, to be honest.

"But that is the nature of football. Spome people look at the size of the football club and not the achievements on the pitch."

McCann confirmed Rovers have a doubt regarding one first-teamer due to an issue picked up in training with the unnamed player rated as 'touch and go' ahead of Sunday's game.

He said: "We will give him as much time as possible to be ready for the game."
