FT: Doncaster Rovers 1-0 Colchester United - Saunders plays down lofty position

Doncaster Rovers took advantage of inactivity of the majority of their promotion rivals to move level on points with League One leaders Tranmere Rovers.

Having made heavy weather of much of the game against lowly Colchester, Rovers finally got a breakthrough six minutes from time through their top scorer Dave Cotterill who cut inside the U’s defence to score his 10th of the season.

Regardless of how the win came, those three priceless points move Dean Saunders’s side up to second, level on 50 points with Tranmere.

“We’ve got 50 points now and that means we should be safe and not get relegated,” said boss Dean Saunders.

“I think the last game against Sheffield United, when they pinched a point after we had been two goals up, took its toll on the players physically and emotionally because we couldn’t seem to get going at all.

“But when we don’t get it together we have the ability to keep a clean sheet and not give anything away.

“I’ve got a team that’s full of character that knows how to win without playing brilliantly but the goal we scored was worthy of winning any game.”
