GRANT McCANN is hoping for good news on George Honeyman after he was injured in Tuesday’s 2-0 defeat at League One rivals Accrington Stanley.

The influential midfielder, who has been in fine form all season, was withdrawn in the second half at the Crown Ground after taking a knock to his shin, making him a doubt for Saturday’s KCOM clash against Swindon Town.

To add to Hull’s frustration, their defeat to play-off chasing Stanley saw them drop to second in the standings and leapfrogged by title rivals Lincoln City, who won 1-0 at Portsmouth – three days after McCann’s team had beaten Pompey 4-0 at Fratton Park.

“We’re concerned because it’s quite a nasty kicked that George has taken,” said McCann. “It looked like the lad went over the ball. You could hear it from the dugout – it was a big whack on his shin. We are concerned but we’ll see how he is over the next few days.”

Second-half goals from Dion Charles and Matt Butcher saw the Tigers fall to a first defeat in seven matches, but McCann had no cause for complaint, criticising his players for lacking the quality he had come to expect in recent weeks.

“It’s frustrating for us, it’s disappointing, but we deserved to lose,” added McCann. “In the second half, Accrington showed more quality than us – we were disappointed with our lack of quality.

“We got into some decent areas but we just didn’t find the last pass, the last shot. Our touch was off at times, we were a bit loose in possession.

“We just lacked a bit of quality in the final third. We didn’t get anything going in the final third in terms of our play, our rhythm. We didn’t get one v ones enough, two v twos, three v threes – we didn’t pass forward quick enough and when we did get in there, we didn’t look like scoring.”
