The Blades were desperate for a win to keep in touch wth the play-off positions, but standing in their way was Clough, who left United last summer after failing to achieve promotion at the Lane.

And Albion grabbed the only goal of the game on 49 minutes, Lucas Akins pouncing for the winner.

United manager Nigel Adkins said: “It’s a bad result and a bad performance.

“We wanted to be on the front foot, we wanted to take the game to Burton but that didn’t happen. It’s a poor goal that we’ve given away. We endeavoured to go 4-2-4 but it just never materialised for us.

“I keep saying to the players that this is a fantastic football club and it’s our responsibility to perform at the arena. We’ve got to handle the pressures that come with it and we’ve got to win football games.

“We need to play in a manner that’s going to excite the crowd and we simply haven’t done that here. I want to make sure there is a pathway for the youngsters but we have to make sure we win games now.

“All in all we never passed the ball well enough, we never competed well enough, so all the basics we all talk about, we simply weren’t good enough.”
