Gerhard Struber bemoans Barnsley FC's final-third decision making

BARNSLEY head coach Gerhard Struber was left to bemoan his side's decision-making in the final third as they spurned another golden chance to make inroads in their survival fight with an underwhelming 0-0 draw with Wigan.

The Reds displayed heart and energy against their Lancastrian rivals - who were reduced to ten men in the 71st minute when Danny Fox was dismissed for a foul on Elliot Simoes - but lacked conviction and quality in the third final and had to frustratingly settle for another solitary point following their midweek draw with Luton.

It was an afternoon when Cauley Woodrow's run without a goal extended to eight matches - he was substituted just after the hour mark - and none of the club's other forwards possessed the wit to overly threaten the Latics rearguard.

It leaves Barnsley with it all to do to secure their safety, even if results elsewhere were benevolent.

But looming large next week are daunting looking appointments with Leeds United, Nottingham Forest and Brentford in the club's final games of the season.

Struber said: "I am very happy with many parts of this game, especially defensive structure and pressing triggers.

"We had so much control in this game and similar to the Luton game, we had many chances.

"This is our topic at the moment. We cannot use (finish) our best chances and we have not the right balance to score the goals.

"This is an issue and my offensive players and strikers are not sharp enough to score goals.

"We are very clear against the ball. But on the ball, in the last third, we need a good balance and timing for the last final pass.

"But we are in fighting mood and will fight until the last game. Especially when we saw the results from other teams around us, we have to until the last game.

"Our goal today was three points and the boys are disappointed with our result. But the performance in many parts of the game was in the right direction."

On the decision to bring off Woodrow, who appeared to kick out in frustration at an advertising hoarding following his substitution just after the hour mark, he added: "I think he is also not happy with his performance at the moment.

"I understand he is frustrated. I am also."

Meanwhile, Struber was critical of a perceived robust approach from Wigan, who were fortunate in the 28th minute when Antonee Robinson was cautiuoned instead of sent off for a wild-looking challenge on Kilian Ludewig.

The Austrian also felt Wigan were lucky to escape another dismissal in the second period following a foul on Callum Styles.

He said: "There was another action against Callym Styles which was a red card with both feet (off the ground).

"This was a game especially from Wigan with infights outside from the border. In the first half, the action against Killy Ludewig was maybe also a red.

"But for me, it was totally clear in the second half that they should have been a red card against Callum Styles.

"It was sometimes out of order what Wigan do."
