Graham Alexander on Bradford City showing the 'monster' in them against derby rivals Huddersfield Town

BRADFORD City manager Graham Alexander hailed his side's turbo-charged derby response after showing the 'monster' in them to triumph 3-1 in their first home derby with Huddersfield Town in almost 19 years.

City shrugged off a slow start to score three unanswered goals. Two were credited to Bobby Pointon, although the Low Moor lad left the stadium following the game with the match-ball after video footage seemed to show that he got a faint touch to the third goal, which was credited to Josh Neufville.

Earlier, Pointon had put the Bantams 2-0 up with close-range finishes as City atoned for their poor first-half in last weekend's loss at Doncaster Rovers, their first set-back of the campaign. They are second in the table now.

Alexander said: "I don’t want to take it off Josh because he was superb again. But Bobby got in there and he said it came off him.

"For a Bradford-born boy playing in his first derby, to score a hat-trick on this day will be remembered for a long time.”

On his side's outstanding derby day, he continued: "I was pleased with everything. The players deserve immense credit coming off the bad result last week into a game of such magnitude and build-up between two local teams who haven’t played each other for so long.

"I thought they handled the whole occasion.

"We had to see through the first 10-15 minutes when they had real pressure and broke through our press a few times.

"But once we tweaked something, the players had that real connection together.

"The first goal was brilliant football and we then just became this monster that kept turning the ball over and going at the opposition.

"We maintained that for a good hour up to the last 10 minutes when we conceded from a corner, lost a bit of momentum and it became a bit end to end.

"But for a derby performance, it’s great to see.

"Games can change on a goal and I think it did change the momentum a little bit. We gained more confidence in our press.

"The second goal was a hammer blow and the third came straight before half-time. It was perfect for us going in at 3-0.

"My concern at that point was whether we’d come off it second half. But we were even more aggressive and more positive in our play.”

And on City's big-game mentality again being displayed at home, he continued: "It’s about ‘keep believing and keep going for things’. Football is a brilliant sport for producing strange things that will people will talk about for years.

"We’ve been really fortunate to have a few of those in the last six months – Cooky (Andy Cook) coming back and scoring two goals, Bobby maybe a hat-trick today, scoring against Fleetwood in the 96th minute.

"It’s down to the quality of the players and the character and personality they have to keep going.”
