Guiseley 1 Sutton United 0: Jordan Thewlis saves fireworks until late as Lions make FA Cup second round
They waited until the 94th minute, but Guiseley pulled off a famous FA Cup victory over Sutton United to reach the second round for only the third time in their history.
Rarely has a free-kick being booted clear been celebrated as enthusiastically as when the LIons scrambled the ball away.
With the full-time whistle delayed by a medical incident at half-time, the fireworks were just starting to flash in the night sky as rfr Zac Kennard-Kettle pointed to the penalty spot in what was the fourth of a minimum of five minutes added to the game.
The 1,556-strong crowd had already had on false alarm when Guiseley thought they had won a penalty in the 86th minute as Jack Tinker was brought down right on the edge of the box, but this time substitute Jordan Thewlis had bundled his way dp into it bfor being brought down.
The 34-year-old striker, in his second spell with the club, stepped up and sent goalkeeper Spike Brit the wrong way to score the only goal of the game .
It was fitting reward for a Lions team who had the better chances, and were finishing normal time the stronger too against full-time Conference side Sutton.
Befitting their status two divisions above Guiseley, it was Sutton who started the stronger, without making it count for anything.
In the fifth minute Ollie Brown was caught under a long ball but when Jermaine Francis played the ball across, Joe Knight was unable to stretch onto it.

The pair almost combined the other way around a few minutes later, Knight playing a nice ball down the channel, but Jack Hall was quick off his line to deny Francis.
Emmanule Osadebe volleyed wide, as did Knight after a break down Sutton's left.
Middlesbrough product Sam Folarin spooned a good chance when Guiseley failed to deal with a long ball.
But once the Lions got to grips with the game, they created the better first-half chances but most fell to defenders.

Elliot Owen headed wide at a 27th-minute corner and two minutes later a great chance fell to left-back Brown arriving at the back post but putting the ball beyond the near.
Form Harrogate Town promotion winner Jack Emmett volleyed off target when the ball came loose to him, and Brown had a goalbound header nodded away after Cam Wilson's free-kick caused problems.
Right-back Lucas Odunston volleyed into a crowd of defenders after Sutton goalkeeper Brits' clearance was cut out.
Half-time was stretched out to 36 minutes by a medical incident, and the second half started in much less open fashion.

But Guiseley winger Amir Berchil got stronger as the game wnt on.
Harrison Hoppr released him with an excellent ball in the 53rd minute but when the ball came over, Murphy's shot was blocked.
When a Wilson free-kick was headed behind for a corner, it was played to Hoppr for a blocked shot.
Jake Taylor headed wide after Tinker did well to snuff out a dangerous break down Sutton's lft.
But it was in the final 10 minutes that the Lions came on strong.
When Berchil did well to beat Besart Topallaj, Murphy fell at the vital minute, the pristine playing surface becoming slipper under the floodlights and the cold night air.
The home fans were celebrating an 86th-minute penalty, only for the referee to rule Tinker was brought down just outside the area. Thewlis made a hash of the free-kick, but that would soon be forgotten.
Berchil got on the end of a long ball as the game ticked into stoppage time, but after cutting inside, could only shoot at the goalkeeper.
That was what Omar Mussa did a couple of minutes late for Sutton's first shot on target of the match.
As minds started to turn to extra-time, Thewlis had other ideas, forcing his way into the Sutton ara and winning the spot kick which would tchd his name into Guiseley history.
