Halifax Town, York City, Guiseley, Farsley Celtic and Bradford (Park Avenue) given their options as National League debates abandoning season

The National League has offered its clubs three options to be discussed at a board meeting later this week with the possibility a second successive season could be abandoned because of Covid-19.

At Wednesday's meetings with clubs the league laid out three options to consider.

The Conference Premier, North and South has been operating since October thanks to £10m of Government grants but they have now expired and £11m of future assistance will only be provided as loans.

Halifax Town play in Conference Premier, and Bradford (Park Avenue), Farsley Celtic, Guiseley and York City in the northern division.

With no revenue coming in through the gate, many clubs believe it is not viable to continue without further funding, and do not believe a loan would solve the problem.

The National League, which administers the three divisions, has asked clubs if they want the option of taking out the loans individually, if the league should take out the loan and distribute it, with the knock-on effect of reduced future prize money, or if the season should be abandoned.

Last season only play-off games were played after England's first lockdown but the season was far enough advanced for promotion and relegation between the divisions, and the Football League. Harrogate Town earned a place in the Football League for the first time by winning the Conference play-offs.

This time, with no side having completed half their league fixture, the season would surely have to be declared null and void.

A meeting is expected on Friday but at this point the weekend games are expected to go ahead behind closed doors.
