Winter breaks may be far from the norm here compared to on the continent, but FC Halifax Town have recently been able to re-charge the batteries courtesy of a mini-break.

It is 13 days since the Shaymen were last in action but that inactivity will come to an end when they host Alfreton Town today in the FA Trophy second round.

The return to action is timely and the prize of a possible trip to Wembley enticing so Halifax are looking forward to taking on a side they have beaten twice already this season in the league.

Fresh from signing a contract extension until the end of the season, Danny Schofield said: “Wembley is the dream, the gaffer has mentioned that.

“He wants to do well in this competition and the goal at the end of it is to get to Wembley.

“I think the squad and team he puts out will be the one he thinks is the strongest to get a win.”

Halifax’s two blank matchdays – Gateshead and Southport were both involved in the FA Cup – meant they lost a little ground in the race for the play-offs.

Neil Aspin’s men are ninth in the table, four points adrift of the top five but with up to three games in hand on all but Eastleigh of the sides above them in the table.

Midfielder Schofield added: “I think we started off the season flying, winning the first five games. If we can replicate that in the second half of the season then it puts us in good stead.

“I think we are in the position now where if we win three or four games on the bounce or even just back-to-back games, then I think it can really propel us into that play-off area.”

Jamie Jackson is expected to be missing with a hamstring injury sustained in Halifax’s last outing, the 2-0 loss to Chester on December 28.

Lois Maynard is also a doubt after missing training earlier this week with a virus.
