HARROGATE TOWN manager Simon Weaver has confirmed that key defender Will Smith is likely to be sidelined until the New Year with a serious hamstring injury.

The Leeds-born player, who started his career at Barnsley, is set to be out for three months and Weaver admits that it represents a 'big loss' for the club.

Weaver said: "Will is not going to be around for a bit unfortunately. But he still has a smile on his face, bless him.

"But he will be missed and it is good that two lads who had two games under their belts and look stronger for it.

"We are probably talking three months which will be a big loss. We will get there.

"It is a squad and he knows he belongs here and we will look after him and make sure he gets the best treatment as he is a fantastic lad and just as good a player.

Harrogate, who return to league action at home to Crawley Town on Saturday, spurned the chance to book a place in the next stages of the Papa John's Trophy after a 2-0 home reverse to Hull City on Tuesday night.

Despite his side's defeat, Weaver took positives from the game against a strong Tigers side featuring the likes of Martin Saumelsen, who produced an excellent performance, Matt Ingram, Dan Batty, Tom Eaves and Hakeeb Adelakun.

"Overall, we can take a lot from the game. There were big individual plusses for us," observed Weaver, whose side can still quality depend on the result of the final group game between Hull and Grimsby Town.

"Tom Walker and Brendan Kiernan really showed their abilities. That is good for us as we are an attacking team and need all of our wide players on it and that strength in depth because we are going to have to probe in different ways this season.

"In front of goal was again a disappointment and we were a bit blunt when we had our chances to pull the trigger and really be in the game and have a winning position and they came and went unfortunately."
