The Reds are in advanced talks with the 21-year-old, who has spent previous loan spells in Yorkshire at Hull City and Doncaster Rovers.

It is unclear whether Kane is joining on loan or permanently after reports in Liverpool suggested that the player is likely to join on a full-time basis - after it was earlier stated that he would be heading to Oakwell on loan.

Kane came to prominence during an outstanding loan spell at Rovers in 2018-19 and first came to the attention of Barnsley supporters when he impressed during Doncaster's draw at Oakwell in November 2018.

His performances saw him named in the League One Team of the Season in a campaign which saw Rovers reach the play-offs and Barnsley secure automatic promotion.

The Bristol-born player linked up again with ex-Doncaster manager Grant McCann at Hull in the second half of last term, but he made just nine appearances in an injury-hit time in East Yorkshire.

Despite struggling with injuries, Kane was linked with a return to the Tigers ahead of the new season, with McCann stating that he would 'love' to keep the midfielder for an extended spell.

He said: "He is everything we need and everything we like in a player. We’d love to keep him next year, possibly longer if we could."

Kane joined Liverpool from Bristol City at the age of 15 and impressed working alongside Liverpool legend Steve Gerrard during his time coaching the club's academy and featuring in the UEFA Youth League.

Alongside Kane, Barnsley are hoping to do further business ahead of Friday's 5pm deadline, while Cauley Woodrow remains an ongoing target for Cardiff City.
