The custodian left the Lancashire outfit at the termination of his contract last month.

Swiss-born Leutwiler will provide back-up to Ryan Schofield and Joel Pereira and will provide an experienced option following Ben Hamer's departure to Swansea City earlier this month.

Bolton Wanderers had also been interested in signing Leutwiler, who had a spell at Middlesbrough earlier in his career before moving to Shrewsbury Town and playing over 100 times for the Shropshire outfit.

Leutwiler - who has also had a spell in England at Blackburn Rovers - is Town's sixth arrival of the January window following on from the captures of Rolando Aarons, Richard Keogh, Duane Holmes, Sorba Thomas and Danny Grant.

Huddersfield Town’s Head of Football Operations Leigh Bromby explained: “With Ben Hamer departing earlier this month, we had a desire to add a third senior goalkeeper to the group to ensure we have the right level of competition and depth between now and the end of the season.

“Jayson arrives at the club with good experience and having played regularly in League 1 during the first half of the season. It’s his job to show us what he can do every day and to push Ryan Schofield, the current incumbent of the number one shirt.”

Head of Goalkeeping Paul Clements added: “Jayson arrived here with glowing references from everyone I spoke to and, having had him in the building for a week, I can see why. He’s a very able goalkeeper and he’s been fantastic around the training ground. It’s no surprise that he has hit the ground running, as he has played regularly in League 1 ahead of his arrival.

“He becomes the senior goalkeeper in our group and has good experience, so his job is to push Ryan and Joel hard every day and to set the standards for them.”

Meanwhile, Stoke City striker Lee Gregory - linked with a loan move to Town - is poised to join Derby County.
