Huddersfield Town chief Liam Manning on 'mixed bag' against Doncaster Rovers and praise for one returning player

HUDDERSFIELD Town head coach Liam Manning felt that his side's EFL Trophy performance against Doncaster Rovers was a ‘mixed bag’ - on a night when the hosts fluffed their lines spectacularly from the penalty spot in a fraught shoot-out which saw the hosts fail to score from four attempts.

Alfie May, Lasse Sorensen, Dion Charles and Antony Evans all missed after the game ended 1-1 after 90 minutes.

Billy Sharp put Rovers in front from the spot in regulation time in the first half, but interval substitute Cam Ashia came off the bench to score for the second successive game.

Town created more than enough chances in the remainder of the quarter-final tie to progress, but a combination of poor finishing, option-taking and goalkeeping from Thimothee Lo Tutala, the hero in the shoot-out, thwarted them and ended their hopes of reaching Wembley in the competition as Rovers triumphed 2-0.

Manning insisted: "There was lots of positives to take. It's just probably the manner of the penalties that feel a little bit frustrating. The lads are disappointed naturally,

"I hate losing, so I'm frustrated, I'm hurt. But at the same point, I think it is one of those where we lost on penalties; we didn't lose in 90 minutes, it was a draw.

"So, when you look at it from that perspective, it's now a case of making sure that we've got 15 (league games) to go, take the good bits, the learning and stuff that we don't like, so in the future we can improve at it and make sure we leave it all out there in the final 15."

On his side's overall display, he continued: "It was a real mixed bag, I thought, and naturally you might get that with the changes we make and connections, relationships.

"I thought in the first half, we had good control of the ball but lacked, probably, a bit of belief, purpose, intent and aggression in the final third to create and take shots and get crosses in. And then the second half, probably the contrast to that, we lost a little control but looked so dangerous on the counter-attack especially.

"It's frustrating to draw the game after 90 minutes given that we've created so many good opportunities.

"I was really, really, pleased for Cam. I think he just puts people on the back foot, right, and he gets people off their seats with taking people on and that's what you want to see.

"Obviously, having Sean (Roughan) and Ant (Evans) back from injury is a terrific thing which was seen as an opportunity to give them minutes tonight.

"I was really impressed with Sean, I thought he did extremely well for his first game back in a while and, obviously, the first one under us was really pleased with how he performed.

"I thought Will (Alves) (also) produced some really good moments."
