Huddersfield Town coach Carlos Corberan’s efforts rewarded with a new contract

Carlos Corberan has been rewarded for over-delivering in his first five months at Huddersfield Town with a new contract.

Like today’s hosts Barnsley, a new coach has transformed the Terriers from a relegation-threatened side into one in mid-table.

Corberan is keen to credit the players of both sides but Huddersfield chairman Phil Hodgkinson has recognised his part with a new contract until then end of 2023-24.

“Ahead of bringing Carlos and his team to the club at the conclusion of last season we laid out a specific set of criteria,” he explained. “Carlos and his team have shown everything we were looking for – and more.

“Carlos and our coaches have brought a clear identity back to our play, win or lose.”

Assistants Jorge Alarcon and Narcís Pelach have also signed for the next three-and-a-half years, and Danny Schofield has penned a new contract after stepping up from the B-team to first-team coaching staff.

Barnsley are on the rise too.

Corberan was impressed when he faced them home and away as part of Leeds United’s coaching staff last season, but they have raised their game since. The sides are level on points in 12th and 13th in the Championship after the Reds stayed up by one point in 2019-20, the Terriers three.

Coaches Corberan and Valerien Ismael and their energetic styles of play have been instrumental, but the Spaniard was keen to share the praise.

“Barnsley have some young players with a lot of ambition,” said Corberan. “The two games against them with Leeds were very, very tough.

“It’s a team with a lot of energy, very aggressive in attack and defence and it will be one of the hardest tests we have this season.

“Ismael’s doing a fantastic job, but the coach who was there at the beginning of the season (Gerhard Struber) and his assistant (Max Senft) have also done a very good job and the players help to make good coaches.”

Centre-back Rarmani Edmonds-Green is one of a number of youngsters benefiting from Corberan’s approach.

“If you’re doing the right things Carlos will give you the chance,” he said. “I can’t believe how far I’ve come in the last 12 months.

“Carlos has brought a lot of confidence to me on the ball. Confidence in the team is growing but we like to stay level-headed and don’t want to overstep the boundaries.”
