Huddersfield Town finally land long-time target

Aarons, whose promising career has stalled badly on Tyneside in recent years, had been afforded a cherished chance to rebuild his career at a club who have pursued him for several months.

The 25-year-old has joined the Terriers on a contract that runs until the summer of 2023, with the club having the option of a further year’s extension.

It is a case of second time lucky for Town, who were close to signing the pacy winger on transfer deadline day, only for the move to fall through at the 11th hour.

Despite the setback, the Terriers maintained their interest in the Jamaica-born player, who joined Newcastle in 2012 after being released by Bristol City, with chairman Phil Hodkingson stating that Aarons remained the club’s top target for January.

Town’s head of football operations Leigh Bromby said: “Having been identified through our recruitment process, it was very clear from our early conversations just how determined he is to kick-start his career.

“That trait in a player’s character is very important to us; we want hungry players who have something to prove.

“The deal didn’t get done as quickly as we wanted, but Rolando has been in constant contact since the summer window and has immersed himself in everything to do with Huddersfield Town, including our style of play.”

The left-sided player, who had a loan spell at Sheffield Wednesday in 2018-19, can also operate on the right and offers versatility in the absence of Josh Koroma.

Head coach Carlos Corberán added: “Technically, he is aggressive in the one v one situations, he has good balance and he also has the skills to unbalance the opponents.”
