Huddersfield Town goalkeeper Lossl expected to return to Everton after loan

Jonas Lossl is set to return to Everton at the end of his loan at Huddersfield Town, according to reports.

Although the news will come as a disappointment to Terriers fans, they had already been warned it was “hugely unlikely” the popular 31-year-old Danish goalkeeper would stay beyond the end of this season.

Lossl, who made 69 Premier League appearances during Huddersfield’s two seasons in the division, returned on loan on January’s deadline day to cover for Kamil Grabara, who suffered a serious head injury.

Hungarian Grabara was approaching full fitness when matches were suspended for the coronavirus.

Now it would appear that as well as being out of Huddersfield’s budget, Lossl is also part of Everton’s plans, despite not yet making his Toffees debut.

Lossl moved to Goodison Park in the summer, but an injury denied him the chance to make his debut against Lincoln City in the League Cup and he took it in turns with Maarten Stekelenburg to be on the bench in Carlo Ancelotti’s initial matches in charge.

Stekelenburg is expected to move on in the summer, when he is out of contract, and Everton want 20-year-old Joao Virginia, who spent the first half of the season on loan at Reading, to push England’s Jordan Pickford.

Grabara is also on loan, from Everton. He suffered concussion and a bleed on the brain during January’s 2-1 win at Hull City.

“We love having Jonas here and it’s great to have him here – he’s a great character,” said chief executive Mark Devlin, before the coronavirus threatened football’s finances. “But, being really honest about it, it is hugely unlikely we would be able to afford to keep Jonas past the end of the season.”

Joel Coleman is the most senior goalkeeper not on loan at Huddersfield. Now 24, he made his Terriers debut on Boxing Day 2016, and featured in that season’s Championship play-off semi-final when Danny Ward was suspended.

He has also had League One loan spells at Oldham Athletic and Shrewsbury Town.

Coleman’s three appearances this season came in the FA Cup, as Grabara’s replacement at Hull, and at Fulham while Lossl waited for clearance to make his second debut for the Terriers. Lossl has made seven.
