Huddersfield Town head coach Carlos Corberan on decision to drop Joel Pereira

HUDDERSFIELD TOWN head coach Carlos Corberan insists that his decision to promote Ryan Schofield to the starting line-up ahead of Joel Pereira in the 0-0 draw at Wycombe Wanderers was all to down to the tactics employed by the Chairboys.

Schofield was handed his first Town start for over a year - and just his second in the league for the club - after being preferred to loanee Pereira, who let in four goals at Stoke City on Saturday.

Corberan felt that Wycombe's direct, set-piece based approach and tactics to stop teams playing out from the back made it necessary for him to plump for Schofield and not Pereira, while being adamant it was no sleight on the ability of the latter.

He said: "I tried to make the decision on the keeper like any player on the pitch. First of all, we need to have three first (team) goalkeepers and that is exactly what we have.

"We have a first goalkeeper in Ben Hamer and the goalkeepers on the bench both need to have the same skills as the first keeper to be ready to play for the first 11.

"Last week it was Pereira and this time it was Ryan Schofield. I need to be select the keeper who will be ready for this type of game we were expecting.

"I was thinking the type of keeper that Ryan is would be better for this type of situation for an opponent who don't allow you to play from the back and that is one of the strengths of Joel.

"We thought Ryan was the best (tonight), but not because Joel is not a good keeper."

Despite securing a hard-fought point against hosts who have improved in recent weeks, the result extended Town's winless run to four matches, with Corberan's side having won just once in their past seven outings.

But the Spaniard has stressed that he remains happy with the attitude and intensity of his side in a season in which much emphasis has been placed on Town reconnecting with their supporters in terms of a more dynamic playing style.

He added: "I respect the Championship as the moment you don't respect it, it can be dangerous.

"I am very conscious of the Champonship's demands and we have to be a strong team who try to win the game until the end and never go onto the pitch trying to get one point.

"Sometimes, we can achieve what we want, sometimes we cannot, but we want to one team who will give everything necessary trying to win.

"The only thing I want is to make the fans proud and them to realise we are fighting for them.

"The most important thing for me is that when the fans watch the game, they are very proud of the effort of the team and at the same time, we hope to have a successful results because we want to make our people happy.
