Huddersfield Town head coach Martin Drury's transfer admission, Herbie Kane update plus injury latest

HUDDERSFIELD Town head coach Martin Drury has confirmed that he would ideally like to complete ‘one or two’ more incoming pieces of business before the end of the summer window on Tuesday night.

Drury remains very happy with the work that Town have done this summer, with seven new players arriving.

The club’s business could not quite be over yet, while some outgoings among his squad could also arrive before the September 1 deadline at 11pm.

Herbie Kane, on his way back from a hamstring issue, has been linked with moves to former clubs Plymouth Argyle and Barnsley.

Asked about incoming transfers, Drury said: “I think, always at the back end of the transfer window, it just turns into chaos, right?

“What I do think is the work that's already gone on right from the owner to Chris (Markham), to everyone at the club, we’ve put ourselves in a position where we don't have to be too chaotic at the back end of the window.

"We've got some real clarity on what we'd like to do at the back end, and if we can do that, then great.

"But nothing's easy at this stage.

"There's certainly probably one or two that we'd like to do, but we'll see what happens over the next few days.

"What I would say is if they don't get done, I'm sat here already a happy man with what we've got.

"I think we've got a real good group, a real good core of men. If we can add to it, great, but if not, we'll move forward with what we've got, and I think we've got some real strengths this season.”

Questioned about interest in Kane, he added: “We've got good players in the building so there's interest in Herbie, there's interest in other players.

"What we have to do is make sure it's right for the player and make sure it's right for the club. So if anyone does move on, then everyone gets the right deal from that.

"Herbie's not someone that I'm sat here saying I don't want at the club. He's a really good footballer and we've got other good footballers.

"So as I say, it's back end of the window, we'll have to see what happens.

"I've liked how Herbie's gone about his business. He's coming back from injury, he looks in a really good place, he looks in a really strong place mentally and he's very close to being ready to play football.

"And if that's with us then great and if it's not with us then we'll work out the best formula for both the player and the club.”

Drury has confirmed that Jack Whatmough (groin), Sean Roughlan (thigh), Cam Ashia (groin) won’t be involved in the League One game at Cambridge United this weekend, alongside long-term absentee Marcus McGuane (ACL). The game also comes too soon for Kane.

He said: “Sean's back on the grass running, so he won't be too far away, but we'll look after Sean and make sure he comes back in the best place he possibly can be. But that's positive.

"Jack picked up an issue last week in training. It’s not too big an issue, not something that we're majorly concerned about.

"I think he'll be two, three weeks away from where we're at right now, if we're doing it properly and doing it safely.

"So hopefully he'll be back in that timescale.

“Herbie's back on the grass running. Cam's the same, just not quite there yet. So we'll continue to build them both up, but they're not far off.

"Herbie's probably a little bit further ahead, but they're not too far away at all. They're both itching to get back and they're playing football for sure.”
