Huddersfield Town transfer news: Terriers feel they have to cash in on youngster

Huddersfield Town midfielder Tom Iorpenda has joined Championship side Swansea City.

The Terriers have decided to sell for an undisclosed fee after Iorpenda showed no interest in extending a contract which is now into its final 12 months.

The 21-year-old made just 15 appearances for the Terriers but proved his worth on loan at Notts County last season. The Londoner made 53 appearances in all competitions last season as the Magpies won the League One play-offs, with Iorpenda contributing three goals and seven assists.

County fans and players both voted him their player of the season.

"Throughout discussions, both Tom and his representatives were left with no doubt about our desire for him to remain a Town player for the long-term. With his existing contract set to expire at the end of the current 2026-27 season," said sporting director Chris Markham.

"Their lack of willingness to engage in those discussions meant that we immediately turned our focus to securing the best deal we could for the club to help us meet both our short and mid term aspirations.

"Reluctantly, we have accepted a lucrative offer from Swansea City for Tom's services, with the deal also structured to ensure that Huddersfield Town will be protected in the future.

"We've been aware for some time of the reality of Tom's departure, and have been proactive in the transfer market to ensure that the impact on the quality and depth available to us within the squad is limited, while remaining alive to any further possibilities.

"While it's a shame to lose Tom and we wish him well for the future, our full focus must remain on those who are fully committed to the club and playing for the badge."

Iorpenda has not taken to the field this season but coach Martin Drury said: "He’s trained really well and has conducted himself and in a professional manner, in line with our culture and values during the last two months.

“I’m disappointed he has chosen to leave our club as I believe our environment would have been a perfect fit for him and his development as both a player and person. However, I admire his ambition and I wish him every success for his future.

"He’s a great example of our player development model, and it’s testament to the academy staff that have invested years of time and good work into Tom and his journey.”

Iorpenda was in the Brighton and Hove Albion academy until Huddersfield signed him as a 16-year-old.

On the back of a loan spell with Hyde United, Iorpenda was voted Huddersfield's academy player of the year in 2023 and promoted to the first team. He made his first-team debut in a 2024 FA Cup tie at Manchester City.
