Hull City 1 Burnley 1: Keane denies Tigers victory

Keane handled, allowing Tigers captain Tom Huddlestone to tuck away a 72nd-minute penalty, before the Clarets central defender hit the equaliser four minutes later to earn them just their second point on the road.

The Tigers made three changes to the side which lost at Arsenal, with Shaun Maloney operating behind lone striker Dieumerci Mbokani and Ahmed Elmohamady brought into midfield for the suspended Sam Clucas.

Striker Abel Hernandez was given a place on the bench after missing the Arsenal defeat with a hamstring problem.

Winger Lazar Markovic was ruled after taking a knock in training and striker Oumar Niasse was consigned to the bench.

Burnley made several changes to the side which suffered that shock FA Cup defeat to Lincoln City and were without Iceland international Johann Berg Gudmundsson after he suffered medial ligament damage in the tie.

Record £13m signing Robbie Brady got the nod to face his former club, who sold him to Norwich for £7m in 2015, having been cup-tied against the Imps.

Another former Hull player, George Boyd, and striker Ashley Barnes were also recalled.

Boyd tested Eldin Jakupovic early on and Mbokani headed over from Hull’s only chance created by Elmohamady.

Midway through the half, Polish winger Kamil Grosicki lobbed over an unguarded goal after Tom Heaton had raced out to challenge Mbokani for a cross.

There was a minute’s applause in the 29th minute in tribute to Hornsea School teacher James Moorfoot, who died recently aged 29 while playing for his local club.

Harry Maguire went down clutching his left hamstring after stretching to meet a Hull free-kick. He hobbled off after treatment but returned to the fray.

Burnley almost struck when a deep free-kick was headed by Ben Mee and Jakupovic could only push it onto the post before winning a free-kick as he pawed away the follow-up.

Grosicki was inches too high with a free-kick from 27 yards after Ashley Westwood had been booked for a foul.

Brady then hit a free-kick into the Tigers to win an unproductive corner and the sides went in level after Elmohamady headed wide at the far post in stoppage time.

Neither side made a change at the break.

Huddlestone went in the book for shoving Boyd after his late challenge on Maguire as the game threatened to come to life, Barnes firing narrowly wide for the Clarets.

Gray also hit wide after racing onto Westwood’s ball down the middle before a sweeping crossfield move from Hull saw Grosicki curl wide of the far post after racing in from the left.

Hull forced three corners in succession before Niasse and David Meyler replaced Mbokani and Maloney.

Hull pressure finally told when Grosicki swung in their fifth corner of the half and Keane handled in the melee, leaving Martin Atkinson with a simple penalty decision.

Huddlestone took it and though Heaton guessed right and got a hand to the ball, he could not keep it out.

Keane struck back four minutes later when Mee challenged for Brady’s corner and the ball fell for Keane to chest down and hammer home from the corner of the six-yard equaliser.

Hull introduced Hernandez for Omar Elabdellaoui in a bid to add greater attacking threat and he bundled the ball wide from Andy Robertson’s cross before the Clarets made two late changes, Brady also departing in the 89th minute.

The Clarets had Barnes sent off in stoppage time for an elbow on Andrea Ranocchia on halfway and the game ended 1-1 as it had done in the meeting at Turf Moor earlier in the season.
