Hull City's Jelavic celebrates scoring his side's second goal.

The 60th-minute close-range header and a late strike from Nikica Jelavic were enough to send Neil Warnock to his first defeat this season as Crystal Palace manager.

Hull began with Stephen Harper in goal for shoulder victim Allan McGregor and James Chester replacing Liam Rosenior as they went back to a 3-5-2 formation.

Palace were unchanged for a third successive game, employing a 4-3-3 formation.

Hull had the chance to make a fine start but Jelavic headed over from Ahmed Elmohamady’s cross.

Palace soon lost Scott Dann, who turned his ankle blocking a shot from Tom Huddlestone, and he was replaced by Adrian Mariappa in the 12th minute.

The visitors did not let that unsettle them and it was not until the closing stages of the half that Hull threatened with Jelavic again heading off target and Abel Hernandez side-footing wide.

The opening goal came when Hernandez’s shot was blocked out to Andy Robertson and he produced a delightful cross for Diame to head home from eight yards.

Harper made a fine save from Yannick Bolaise before the points were sealed as Jelavic raced from halfway, turned Martin Kelly and toe-poked home from inside the area in the 89th minute.

There was still time for Rosenior, who had replaced Robertson, to clear an inswinging corner off the line.
