Hull City’s five greatest League Cup matches

LET’S hear it for Hull City, who have already made history in their Capital One Cup trail this season by reaching the quarter-final stage for the first time ever - a case of fifth time lucky.

But once you get the taste for making history, you obviously want a bit more.

Despite a largely low-key run in the competition in its various guises for too many years to mention, Tigers supporters have enjoyed some choice, if infrequent moments over the years.

It goes without saying that they will be hoping for another one - and a bit more besides - at Manchester City’s Etihad Stadium this evening.

Here’s five famous League Cup encounters featuring the black-and-amber - in no particular order.

1: Hull City 1 Leicester 1 (AET, Hull win 5-4 on penalties), October 27, 2015: Hull made eight changes for their clash with the Foxes at the KC Stadium, but still managed to create a spot of history by reaching the quarter-finals of the competition for the first time in its 55-year history after a deserved penalty shoot-out success over the Midlanders.

David Meyler fired home the decisive spot-kick, with all the penalties scored apart from Riyad Mahrez, who saw his effort saved by Eldin Jakupovic.

The in-form Foxes winger had earlier put the visitors ahead after a goalless 90 minutes, scoring a rebound in the 100th minute, but the lead was short-lived with fellow sub Abel Hernandez levelling.

Hernandez went onto score in the shoot-out along with fellow Tigers players Shaun Maloney, Tom Huddlestone, Chuba Akpom and Meyler.

2. Spurs 2 Hull City 2 (AET Spurs win 8-7 on penalties), October 30, 2013: There was pride but ultimately disappointment for the Tigers, who went down on penalties at White Hart Lane as their wait for a first appearance in the quarter-finals continued - despite the bravest of efforts.

After a miss apiece in the first five kicks, Ahmed Elmohamady was denied by Brad Friedel to decide the tie.

Gylfi Sigurdsson’s first-half 25-yarder had put the home side ahead, before Friedel fumbled into his own net.

Paul McShane nodded home in extra time to give the visitors the lead for the first time, but substitute Harry Kane’s low shot sent the game to spot-kicks.

3. Wigan 0 Hull City 1, August 28, 2007: Hull sent top-flight outfit Wigan packing on their own patch thanks to a fine 20-yard volley from Stuart Elliott, in a season which famously ended in promotion to the top-flight. Wayne Brown and Calbe Folan also went close to second goals on the night for the Tigers as they impressively progressed into round three.

4. Hull City 3 Leicester City 2, October 31, 1973: Hull booked their place in the fourth round, triumphing by the odd goal in five against a higher-division Foxes side who went onto reach the FA Cup semi-finals in that 1973-74 campaign. Visiting goals from Frank Worthington and Mike Stringfellow were to no avail, as Hull, who earned a replay after a 3-3 draw at Filbert Street, prevailed.

Hull exited the competition in round four at Anfield.

5. Hull City 2 Sheffield United 0; October 7, 1975: The Tigers piled on the woe for the Blades, toiling at the foot of Division One in a torrid season which culminated in relegation - as they went down to their 10th defeat in 13 matches at the start of 1975-76 in a reverse at Boothferry Park.

Hull reached the fourth round, only to bow out at Doncaster Rovers.
