Grant McCann hailed his goalscorers as Hull City booked their place in the second round by exacting a modicum of revenge over their League One promotion rivals.

A goal in each half proved enough for McCann’s side, who had lost to the same opponents earlier in the season.

On that occasion, Hull left the north west with their tails between their legs, having been dispatched 4-1 by their rivals for promotion from League One.

But on this occasion, it was Hull who triumphed.

Josh Magennis, with his third goal of the season, got Hull off the mark with an acrobatic finish.

Reece Burke made life more comfortable just after the hour as he nodded the ball in from a corner as Hull saw the game out to put their name in the hat for the second round.

McCann said: “It was a ploy of ours to open them up. Richie Smallwood has found Josh Emmanuel, he’s chopped on his left foot. Mallik has got the flick in the box and it’s a great finish from Josh Magennis.

“He has been excellent all season. His experience and know-how and his voice, in and around people like Keane Lewis-Potter and Mallik Milks.

“They’re benefitting from it because they’re getting their goals off Josh.”

And on Burke, he added: “Reece is delighted. He’s come close this season on numerous occasions.

“He’s been working hard at that. I saw him in the gym the other day, heading a ball we’ve got dangling from the ceiling.”
