Phelan lands in Hull to give Bruce boost

Mike Phelan has been appointed as Hull City’ s new assistant manager.

The 52-year-old succeeds Steve Agnew, who left for Middlesbrough over the New Year period, as Steve Bruce’s right-hand man.

Phelan recently quit Norwich City and Bruce moved quickly to snap up his former team-mate.

The Tigers’ chief said: “I’m delighted to welcome Mike to the club. Mike brings a wealth of experience to the position having worked with Sir Alex (Ferguson) at Manchester United for many years.

“I have known Mike for a long time and he is a good person who will undoubtedly add something different at the training ground.”

Phelan spent five years assisting Ferguson at Old Trafford.

The former Burnley midfielder said: “I am extremely pleased to be at this football club.

“I want to work hard and channel all of my energy into helping the staff, the players and everyone associated with the club.

“I am looking forward to working with Steve and, hopefully, I can bring with me some of the things I have learned over the years to help us improve.”
