Season looks over after horror injury

ALLAN McGREGOR will remain in hospital for at least a week after suffering kidney damage likely to have ended his season.

The Scottish international suffered the horror injury in the midweek defeat to West Ham United and has spent the past three nights in the high-dependency unit of the Wellington Hospital, London.

Manager Steve Bruce did not return north with the rest of the Hull squad on Wednesday night to remain with McGregor, who is now set to miss the run-in as he battles back from a contusion to his kidney – an injury more commonly seen in car crash victims.

The Tigers chief said: “I stayed down and when you see someone in high dependency, it is frightening.

“It is known as a contusion. You can’t operate on it, you have to try to sort it out with drugs. If the kidney is very badly damaged, you have to take it out. But I don’t think it is going to come to that because he has had a good 24 hours.”

McGregor, who yesterday won his appeal against the red card, sustained the injury in a sickening collision with Mohamed Diame that led to West Ham’s penalty.

Bruce added: “Allan is in a bit of discomfort but we hope, in the next two or three days, that we will know a bit more. He is going to be in hospital for the best part of a week, that shows you how serious is.

“It is a contusion and he has broken the ninth rib. There’s no operation, you can’t repair it.

“A blow like this is cruel because he has done so well. He’s been our permanent goalkeeper, which is something we haven’t had for three years or more.”

Asked if McGregor was out for the season, Bruce replied: “The doctors have said if the kidney repairs, he is out for six weeks. Allan said to me, ‘The Cup final is in seven weeks’. Typical Allan.”
