Sheffield Wednesday, beaten by Hull City at Wembley in last May's Championship play-off final, have extended Kieran Lee's contract by two years to 2019.

The midfielder made 52 appearances last term, more than any other player at Hillsborough.

“I have enjoyed it here from the very first day and can see the club is moving in the right direction,” said Lee. “And I want to be part of it. Obviously, our aim is to get back into the Premier League and I believe we can do it. We came so close last season but the lads are refreshed and focused and ready to go again.”

Wednesday continue to close in on Watford midfielder Almen Abdi after agreeing a £3m fee. Carlos Carvalhal is keen to make a double swoop on Vicarage Road, with Daniel Pudil – so impressive on loan with the Owls last term –also edging closer to a permanent move.
