League 1 and League 2 transfers: Huddersfield Town and Sheffield Wednesday make moves plus Barnsley FC speculation

PERSISTENCE has paid off for Huddersfield Town, who enticed midfielder Cameron Humphreys back for a second loan stint at the club on deadline day.

The 22-year-old spent a loan spell at the Accu Stadium in the second half of last term – making 22 appearances and scoring two goals.

Humphreys has had a contract extension activated at parent club Ipswich Town in the spring, but he has returned to West Yorkshire with Town maintaining their interest.

On the outgoing front, midfielder Antony Evans has linked up with former Terriers head coach Lee Grant after joining Walsall on loan for the rest of the season.

The former Bristol Rovers man is down the pecking order at Town and is yet to feature this season. He is out of contract next summer.

There was the potential for some other squad players to head out ahead of the deadline, with Town also hoping that their incoming business was not quite finished as well as The Yorkshire Post went to press.

Another loanee returning to a club in Yorkshire like Humphreys is Manchester City midfielder Jaden Heskey, who is back at Sheffield Wednesday for a second loan spell.

Meanwhile, the future of Barnsley winger Reyes Cleary took in a twist in the build-up to the deadline amid reports that he had handed in a transfer request in a bid to force a move away as the clock ticked down to 11pm.

Cleary's situation has been the subject of considerable speculation throughout 2026 and it is understood that Bristol City had made a renewed move to sign him before the cut-off point.

The 22-year-old winger, contracted until the summer of 2029, has been linked with a number of other second-tier clubs during 2026 including Blackburn Rovers, Millwall and Sheffield United.

Speaking at a fans' forum earlier this year, chairman Neerav Parekh revealed that the club had turned down four bids for their star winger from two different Championship clubs.

There has been renewed interest during the current window.

The Reds supremo has always insisted that the club would not sell Cleary 'on the cheap', while adding that there was 'a price for everyone obviously' if a valuation was met. Barnsley were pursuing another striking option, on the incoming front.

Barnsley defender Corey O'Keeffe, meanwhile, made the switch to Bradford City.

Another player on the move was Doncaster Rovers winger Glenn Middleton, who completed a permanent move to League Two side Rochdale for an undisclosed fee.

The ex-Scotland Under-21 international, 26, had been transfer-listed since late spring when the club announced their retained list at the end of last season and has now finally moved on after a deal was struck with Dale.

The move follows on from Rovers’ deadline-day capture of experienced striker James Collins, who has joined on loan from Lincoln City until January.

York City midfielder Mark Shelton has joined Grimsby Town on loan.
