Newcastle United 'rekindle' interest in Leeds United-linked goalkeeper James Trafford

Newcastle United have reportedly rekindled interest in Manchester City goalkeeper James Trafford, who has repeatedly been linked with Leeds United.

The 23-year-old returned to Manchester City last summer after two stellar seasons at Burnley, only to find himself behind Gianluigi Donnarumma in the pecking order.

There has been regular talk of a potential move for Trafford, who is currently on World Cup duty as part of England’s goalkeeping stable.

James Trafford latest

Leeds have been credited with interest in Trafford on a number of occasions having seen Lucas Perri underwhelm since his £15.6m move from Lyon last summer.

However, they could face competition from Newcastle if they do look to make a move for the England international.

According to The Athletic, the Magpies have rekindled interest in Trafford despite their recent capture of Ewen Jaouen from Stade de Reims.

Formal talks are not thought to have taken place, although there is said to have been contact between Newcastle and Manchester City. It has been suggested Trafford wants to assess his future after the World Cup, which could complicate matters.

Potential Nick Pope opportunity

Leeds may struggle to match Newcastle’s financial power and getting into a bidding war is rarely wise. However, if the Magpies did sign Trafford, it could open up a window of opportunity for the Whites.

The West Yorkshire club have been linked with Newcastle’s Nick Pope, who does not appear to have a future at St James’ Park amid a recruitment drive.

If Newcastle strike a deal for Trafford, Pope could find himself in the role of third-choice goalkeeper in Eddie Howe’s squad. This could make a deal easier for Leeds to line up if they do decide to pursue the 34-year-old.

As it stands, there is plenty of uncertainty in Leeds’ goalkeeping department. Karl Darlow and Alex Cairns are both out of contract at the end of the month and there is doubt over the future of Perri.

Illan Meslier has already moved on having been released after seven years on the books at Elland Road.
