'I don't think' - Fresh verdict on Leeds United's pursuit of Southampton star Shea Charles issued

A former Premier League scout has delivered a verdict on Leeds United interest in Shea Charles

A former Premier League scout believes a £30m valuation could deter Leeds United from signing Southampton star Shea Charles.

Leeds are known to be admirers of Charles, who enjoyed a stellar 2025/26 season in the Championship. He built upon an impressive 2024/25 campaign on loan at Sheffield Wednesday, becoming a key figure for the Saints.

Reports have indicated Leeds have lodged bids for the Northern Ireland international, but he has reported to Southampton for pre-season training.

Verdict on Shea Charles pursuit

Whenever negotiations rumble on, fans get twitchy and question whether or not a deal will be doable. Mick Brown, a former scout for the likes of Sunderland and Blackburn Rovers, believes £30m would be too steep for the Whites if that is what Southampton demand.

He told Football Insider: “It's difficult for the club, because when you want a player, it's hard to walk away from a deal and you can sometimes make excuses for overspending.

“But Leeds aren't in a position to do that, they need the funds to spend elsewhere, so £20m would have been ideal, £23m fine, but £30m will be too much.

“I don't think they'll be prepared to go to that price, so they're going to have to look elsewhere at other targets who are more within their price range.

“Maybe they could revisit Charles later in the window if his price tag drops, but it looks like Southampton are prepared to stand by their demands.”

Leeds United’s midfield

If Leeds are priced out of the Charles pursuit, there is plenty of time for the Whites to look elsewhere. In the interim, they can take solace in the fact they are well-stocked in the middle of the park.

Whites boss Daniel Farke has Ethan Ampadu, Anton Stach, Ao Tanaka, Ilia Gruev and Sean Longstaff at his disposal.

Four of the aforementioned five have reported back for pre-season training, with Tanaka yet to make a comeback following his involvement in Japan’s World Cup campaign.
