One way or another, as the coronavirus pandemic continues to take hold, it is certainly a time to reflect.

With games suspended until at least April 30 to try to help contain the spread of the coronavirus, clubs like Leeds United and Rotherham United are in limbo, not knowing if their hard work is going to be rewarded with promotion. Might Sheffield United be playing in Europe for the first time next season? Could they even get the chance to push for the Champions League?

Barnsley sit in the Championship relegation zone, Hull City precariously above it.

Each day The Yorkshire Post writers are having their say on the county’s league clubs but we have also asked supporters for their verdict on the season so far.

For some it is a celebration. This has been arguably the greatest season of most Sheffield United fan’s lives.

“Beyond our wildest dreams... the best United team I have ever seen,” says Jim Blackburn.

The quality of football that has taken Leeds to the top of the Championship has been pretty special too.

“It will only be in years to come that we will really appreciate it,” says Mick Druce.

Rotherham fan Lee Rowbotham takes pleasure from how a revamped squad has responded to relegation. Stephen Waddington has been impressed with Doncaster Rovers manager Darren Moore and Danny Cowley has brought Steven Downes hope, taking Huddersfield Town out of the “full-on nightmare” of early season by “strengthening the defence and cobbling together an exciting, dynamic midfield.”

There have been great goals to cherish too during the lay-off.

Druce remembers Stuart Dallas’s for Leeds at Stoke City – “a defence-splitting pass completed with a first-touch finish”, Graeme Bandeira looks back fondly at Ashley Fletcher’s 40-yard dipping half-volley for Middlesbrough against West Bromwich Albion, Rick Skelton marvels in Kamil Grosicki’s floated free-kick for Hull City at Millwall, “at least 35 yards out and tight to the left wing,” and James Mackenzie calls Dylan Connolly’s goal for Bradford City against Plymouth Argyle “a beaut! – on a cow patch of a surface he took the clearance from a corner, killed the ball and then curled beautifully into the top right-hand corner.”

There have been frustrations too, Mackenzie calling Bradford’s 2019-20: “A real disappointment.” He blames previous manager Gary Bowyer’s lack of a plan B for some dull football, and “massively under-appreciated the ongoing impact of the Edin Rahic years.”

Owners are a problem at Hull too, where, as at Sheffield Wednesday, form has dropped off a cliff since Christmas. “Despite genuine attempts to fix the problems they caused, things will never change as long as they remain,” claims Skelton. Owls fan Louis Shackshaft is not alone in wanting a summer clearout at his club.

“It looked like it could be a decent season,” reflected Simon Nichol on Barnsley’s opening day, “but in hindsight it was a case of Fulham not turning up.”

Hopefully for the Reds, there is another chapter to be written, while some would just like to close the book on 2019-20.
