Crysencio Summerville and Willy Gnonto showing the right attitude as Leeds United focus on central midfield signings

Daniel Farke has been pleased with the attitudes of Crysencio Summerville and Willy Gnonto in pre-season as speculation over their Leeds United futures continues.

So much so it is central midfield Farke is more focused on as he looks to add depth in a window where most of the business has been out.

A host of clubs have been linked with the wide attackers since the Whites missed out on promotion to the Premier League last season.

It is understood that having sold Archie Gray and Glen Kamara, plus moving on others for smaller fees and loans, Leeds are not in a position where they would be forced to sell, but by ending Djed Spence's season-long loan midway through and excluding Charlie Cresswell from the first team group for a time Farke showed he will not tolerate players who do not show the right attitude.

Italy international Gnonto was a problem in that regard last August, requesting a transfer, but the then-19-year-old was talked around and went on to make 24 Championship appearances, scoring twice.

Summerville was Championship player of the year last season.

"In football you can never rule out anything," said Farke, when asked about the pair. "I can’t give any guarantees as I am not a magician.

"I can just judge what I see and both are fully integrated, they are fun to be here, they work hard.

“I just can judge what I see, I see hard work and commitment, great attitude and for that I am more than hopeful they chip in with top performances like last season."

Pascal Struijk’s return from the hernia injury that ended his 2023-24 at Christmas allowed Ethan Ampadu to return to central midfield in Wednesday's 4-1 friendly win over Hannover, but Leeds are still looking for new players in that position.

“We have lost two really good midfield options with Archie Gray and Glen Kamara,” Farke pointed out. “We brought Joe Rothwell (on loan from Bournemouth), a pretty experienced player, in, who is also good in possession and can chip in with goals and great set-pieces.

“We’re happy so far, but we won’t fall asleep until the window is closed. This is definitely one of the positions we could do with a new addition.

“It has to be a quality player, good personality, he has to bring the skills we need and to be affordable.”
