The Swiss defender has made 155 appearances in all competitions for the club since joining from Sampdoria six years ago.

Berardi's contract was due to expire at the end of June, but he signed a short-term deal to allow him to complete the season at Elland Road.

Now Leeds have repaid the favour, extending his stay by a year even though Berardi suffered anterior cruciate ligament damage in that time.

Berardi suffered the injury in a dead rubber, playing against Derby County so captain Liam Cooper could be rested, his team having won the Championship that weekend.

The 32-year-old right-footer was signed mainly as a full-back but has principally been used in the centre of defence by Marcelo Bielsa.
