Fan reaction justifies McDermott’s confidence

NEW Leeds United manager Brian McDermott is sensing an air of positivity around Elland Road.

The curtain comes down today on the club’s home campaign with a visit from Gus Poyet’s promotion-chasing Brighton & Hove Albion.

It will be McDermott’s fourth game in charge and there can be little doubt that the appointment of the 52-year-old has brought a feel-good factor back to the club after what has been a disappointing season on the field.

That much was underlined yesterday when United revealed a commendable 10,910 season tickets had been sold ahead of the first deadline for fans to renew at a reduced price.

McDermott said: “I have sensed positivity around the city. I can’t comment on what happened before. I am brand new and have no history here. None at all.

“That means no baggage and that I look at things with fresh eyes. That means I can only do what I think is right. Same with Nigel (Gibbs, assistant manager).

“What has gone on in the past is irrelevant. Let’s get today right. And tomorrow.

“This club is massive. Absolutely massive. A one-city club. If we do what we have been doing right then we will get where we want to be.”

With one game remaining after today, Leeds are destined to finish in mid-table. For Brighton, however, there is much more at stake as Gus Poyet’s side look to cement their place in the play-offs.

The Seagulls, who sit fourth but have played a game more than Crystal Palace, are particularly keen to secure home advantage in the decisive semi-final second leg.

McDermott added: “I always think the last game at home is important to give the fans a good send off so they are looking forward to coming back next season.”

Meanwhile, Peter Lorimer has been appointed by owners GFH Capital as the club’s first football ambassador.

The United legend, who has stepped down from the board ahead of Ken Bates’ final home game as chairman, will represent the club at fans’ forums plus community and commercial events.

Fellow director Yvonne Allen is also stepping down but will remain as an employee. As part of a restructuring of the Elland Road hierarchy, Bahraini based businessman, Salah Nooruddin, has been appointed as a director.
