Former head coach Uwe Rosler slams Leeds United’s hiring and firing culture

Uwe Rosler has criticised a hire and fire culture at Leeds United, one that he feels is replicated throughout the Championship.

Rosler lost his job at Leeds on October 19 after only 12 games in charge, in which he won only two games. He was replaced by current head coach Steve Evans on the same day.

The German had previously been in charge of Wigan Athletic in the Championship, and managed Brentford in League One.

Speaking to German magazine Kicker, Rosler admitted he thinks the chase for the Premier League is damaging managers.

He said: “About half of the teams in the Championship dream about the jackpot; £120 million from the Premier League.

“This causes owners of the clubs to lose their nerves quickly, and causes quick hirings and firings.

“That’s what’s happening now at Leeds.”

Rosler also criticised several aspects of the second tier of English football, including the number of fixtures, the loan system and the owners in charge of most clubs.

He continued: “From August, there are 46 matches in ten months, plus the two cups, and the pressure is immense.

“This league is crazy. There is a game every three days, so you have a lot to regenerate and has so little time to build something.

“As in the Premier League, the owners are just people from all over the world, who do not know this league. And most do not buy a club for the love of football or for tradition, but see their club as a pure investment.

“The horrendous parachute payments for the teams relegated from the Premier League distorts the whole competition.

“There’s also the loan system. In principle, one can borrow players in the short term up to the end of March. Whoever has the best contacts gets the good players who are sitting on the bench in the Premier League.”
