Mowatt is on the radar of Scotland coach Gordon Strachan and was watched by Strachan’s assistant, Mark McGhee, during Leeds’ 2-0 defeat to Brighton on Tuesday night.

The 20-year-old - shortlisted for the Championship’s player-of-the-month award in November and a fixture in United’s line-up this season - has already been capped by England at Under-19 level and he was included in their Under-20 squad before Christmas.

Doncaster-born Mowatt, however, qualifies for Scotland through his father’s side of the family and Scottish youth coach Ricky Sbragia attempted to name Mowatt in the Scotland Under-19 squad around the time of his breakthrough into the England set-up.

FIFA rules permit players under the age of 21 to switch countries provided they have not been capped at senior level.

United head coach Neil Redfearn said: “I would imagine they (Scotland) would be interested in him because he’s a talented young boy.

“He’s been absolutely outstanding for us, particularly recently, and he’s been a real goal threat.”

Mowatt - a product of Leeds’ academy - made his England Under-19 debut in March 2014 during a 3-0 victory over Turkey.

He was due to link up with the Under-20 side earlier this season but withdrew as a precaution with Leeds anxious to protect his fitness.
