The Tory Party HQ was left red-faced when it invited former Leeds United managing director David Haigh to help the party campaign in Rothwell this weekend, seemingly unaware he is currently banged up in a Dubai jail cell.

In a tweet from the Conservative’s Team 2015 account, the party contacted the former Whites chief directly asking him to RSVP to the campaign day in Elmet and Rothwell for local MP Alec Shelbrooke.

Haigh is currently imprisoned on Dubai after he was accused of allegations of fraud amounting to some £3m.

He was arrested last year when he attended a meeting at a subsidiary of Gulf Finance House, a former employer.

He is accused of having fabricated invoices and caused £3m to be paid into his own bank accounts.

Haigh denies any wrongdoing and is yet to receive a trial date.
