Leeds sign Oldham striker Matt Smith

LEEDS United has agreed a deal to sign Oldham Athletic striker Matt Smith who was also strongly linked with a move to Championship rivals Blackburn Rovers.

The 24-year-old is out of contract at Boundary Park and will officially join the Whites on July 1 on a two year deal.

Brian McDermott has beaten a host of clubs to secure the signature of the striker, who scored 14 goals for Oldham after joining them from Solihull Moors in 2011.

Smith’s name shot to prominence during Athletic’s impressive run in the FA Cup last season when they reached the fifth round.

He scored goals against both Merseyside clubs as Oldham beat Liverpool and forced Everton into a replay at Goodison Park.

The Birmingham-born marksman started his career as a trainee at Cheltenham Town. He gained experience of non-league football with Solihull while gaining a degree in International Management at the University of Manchester.
