Leeds United 1 Sheffield Wednesday 1: Carvalhal hails Matias wonder goal

Carvalhal, 26, showed magical footwork to expose the Leeds defence, flicking the ball over his shoulder from left foot to right and finding the far corner of the net with a delicious lob.

That gave Wednesday a 37th-minute lead, after Leeds had bossed the opening exchanges, but a double substitution 11 minutes into the second half paid off with a 61st-minute equaliser from Chris Wood.

Leeds boss Uwe Rosler replaced Sam Byram and Kalvin Phillips with Alex Mowatt and Luke Murphy - enabling Stuart Dallas to switch from left wing to right.

Sol Bamba and Mowatt combined to send Dallas scampering in from the right and the winger’s low cross into the goalmouth was blasted in by Wood.

Carvalhal said: “Marco is a player who has come into the Championship and he was a big influence in our team today.

“He will be an even better player in the future because he was very tired when he came off with 15 minutes left and we have played a lot of games in a very short time.

“Marco’s goal was very special. He showed excellent technique. He wasn’t so good against Reading in midweek but he made up for that today.”

Rosler, still without a win, refuses to be downhearted.

He said: “We say the glass is half full, not half empty.

“It was our fourth game in nine days, which is very hard, especially at this early stage of the season, but we have come through those games unbeaten and I am delighted.

“We were not as good on the ball as we would have liked but we were carrying the midweek game at Bristol City in our legs.

“We went behind to a wonder goal - congratulations to them for that. I haven’t seen a better goal than that, but we did well to come back and score a very good goal of our own, which showed the character we have in the team. That character will be tested throughout the season.

“We were a goal down for the first time this season but we came back strongly and I tried to win the game by sending on another striker (Souleymane Doukara).

“Apart from their goal I can’t remember them creating a chance.”

Rosler declined to comment on reports that Leeds have agreed a deal with Watford to take striker Fernando Forestieri from Watford.

Wood had a golden opportunity to win the game for Leeds but his 68th-minute header was off target from a mere eight yards.
