Which Championship club are Yorkshire’s top dogs?

Leeds United are the kings of Yorkshire when it comes to White Rose derbies term, with United having come out top of the county’s unofficial Championship league.

The Whites have taken an impressive 16 points from seven derby matches this term, with the final all-Yorkshire affair coming on Saturday when they entertain Rotherham United at Elland Road.

The Owls are in second place in the unofficial Championship league, taking 13 points from eight games.

Boro are in third, having done the double over Rotherham United and Huddersfield, but seeing Leeds and the Owls beat them twice this season - something no other second-tier rivals have done to them.

The Millers have taken eight points from their seven Yorkshire derbies so far, while Town have failed to muster a victory in eight matches with rivals from across the Broad Acres, pocketing a meagre three points.

It is Leeds who lead the way, having done doubles over Huddersfield Town and Middlesbrough and also taken four points from two meetings with Sheffield Wednesday.

Their only derby defeat came in a 2-1 loss on their first-ever visit to the AESSEAL New York Stadium to face Rotherham United on October 17.

A brace of seasonal wins over Town enabled Leeds to secure the double over their West Yorkshire neighbours for the first time before the outbreak of the Second World War in 1939.

Billy Sharp, playing for his third Yorkshire club in Leeds, netted the late winner in a 2-1 verdict at the John Smith’s Stadium on January 31, 2015.

It followed on from another dramatic late intervention in the 1-0 victory over Boro at Elland Road on August 16, United’s first home game of the campaign and only league win under the command of David Hockaday.

United went onto triumph at the Riverside Stadium on February 21 thanks to an Alex Mowatt strike as they secured their first double over Boro since 1989-90 when they were promoted to the top-flight under Howard Wilkinson.

It continued United’s almost unblemished sequence at the Riverside where they have lost just once in 13 visits.

Saturday’s victory at Hillsborough, courtesy of goals from Charlie Taylor and Steve Morison, was also noteworthy, with Leeds winning at S6 for the first time since August 2006.

The Owls claimed a double over Boro for the first time since 1990-91, with their fine 3-2 win at the Riverside in late August being their first ever at the Teesside venue, with their previous win in this quarter of the north-east coming courtesy of a 2-0 win at Ayresome Park on New Year’s Day 1991.

Wednesday also secured a dramatic last-gasp 3-2 success in their South Yorkshire derby at Rotherham on March 21, with the Millers having not beaten the Owls in the league on home soil since 1976.

The derby highlight for the Millers this term arrived courtesy of a 2-1 televised win over Leeds in the autumn, thanks to a strike from sub Jonson Clarke-Harris, while their 2-0 victory at Huddersfield on March 7, courtesy of goals from Kari Arnason and Conor Sammon was also noteworthy.

It was the Millers’ first league victory at Huddersfield in over fifty years since, when they won 2-0 at Leeds Road in 1964.

Last season, Doncaster Rovers finished at the top of Yorkshire’s unofficial Championship league, winning 16 points from ten matches, but suffering relegation at the end of the season.
