It took until the second period for them to kick away from an equally intense Southampton side, but they were very deserving winners.

Illan Meslier – a really important low save from Stuart Armstrong at 1-0 7

Diego Llorente – correctly spared a penalty and let off when he gave the ball away early on, but a good pass to help set up the opening goal was one of a number of positive contributions 6

Liam Cooper – a solid display from the captain 7

Pascal Struijk – played his part in the back three 6

Luke Ayling – less eye-catching than usual but did his job 6

Mateusz Klich – succumbed to injury after an hour 6

Stuart Dallas – his outstanding goal was fitting reward for his performance 8

Tyler Roberts – a wonderful pass for Patrick Bamford's opening goal, although he should have put the game to bed with one of his own 7

Jack Harrison – tried on both wings but disappointingly quiet 5

Patrick Bamford – a very assured finish to open the scoring 7

Raphinha – incredible display, he scored a goal and would have had a string of assist but for poor finishing by his team-mates 9

Helder Costa (for Harrison, 46) – a really positive impact after coming on 7

Ezgjan Alioski (for Klich, 61) – infuriated Bielsa at one point but could have made a fourth 6

Pablo Hernandez (for Roberts, 75) – volleyed Alioski's clipped ball over in stoppage time 6.
