Leeds United legend Norman Hunter in hospital with coronavirus

The defender, who won 28 England caps, was a stalwart of Don Revie's great sides, making most of his 540 appearances for the club under its greatest manager.

Hunter was the first winner of the PFA Players' Player of the Year Award in 1973-74, Revie's final season as manager.

The Durham-born player made his first-team debut in 1962 and went on to win the Second Division championship, two First Division titles, FA Cup, League Cup and two Fairs Cups at Elland Road. He also played in the 1975 European Cup final, under Jimmy Armfield.

Hunter left Leeds for Bristol City in 1976 and after three seasons at Ashton Gate, he finished his playing career with three more at Barnsley, where he became manager in 1980.

In his first season as manager at Oakwell, he won promotion from Division Three.

He was sacked in February 1984, and after a spell coaching West Bromwich Albion, had two years as Rotherham United manager. He also had a spell coaching Bradford City.

Hunter was a non-playing member of England's 1966 World Cup winning squad, and played as a substitute when West Germany knocked the Three Lions out of the tournament four years later.

He remains a well-loved figure around Elland Road.

“We would like to take this opportunity to remind the public and the media to respect the wishes of Norman and his family and to give them the space they need during this difficult time.
