Marcelo Bielsa on Jamie Shackleton and Tyler Roberts's development as Leeds United players

Marcelo Bielsa has challenged Tyler Roberts and Jamie Shackleton to make themselves regulars in his Leeds United line-up.

Shackleton has started the last two matches, and Roberts was also chosen at Wolverhampton Wanderers on Friday, a third league start of the season for both.

With Kalvin Phillips and Rodrigo injured for Tuesday's game at home to Southampton, both could be selected again but the the challenge is to ensure they are not reliant on others being unavailable to get a game.

“What Tyler needs is to play with continuity, not because anyone is missing but because he deserves to keep his place,” Bielsa said of the 22-year-old attacking midfielder of centre-forward. “Depending on this, we will see if he is able to consolidate himself as a Premier League player.

“The game he played the other day should allow him to continue in the team but to consolidate himself in the team he needs to improve. He needs to be able to create more danger and to generate fear from the opponents. The game the other day was an excellent first step but he needs to keep on evolving.”

Whereas Roberts is a full Wales international, Leeds-born 21-year-old Shackleton is slightly further back in his development, but has made some important contributions filling in at right-back and in central midfield.

“I believe in Shackleton as an important alternative for Leeds United. He's in a similar process to Pascal (Struijk), the only thing is Pascal has a continuity (of selection) Shackleton hasn't been able to have. I consider him a player I can trust and I'm satisfied with what he's brought to the team.

“He's a very serious player, with good application and very conscious of what's needed to play at this level."
