Patrick Bamford offered England hope by Gareth Southgate

ENGLAND manager Gareth Southgate has offered some Three Lions hope to Patrick Bamford - despite the Leeds United player missing out on a place in his latest international squad.

The national team face the Republic of Ireland in a Wembley friendly next Thursday, before heading to Belgium and welcoming Iceland to London as their Nations League group reaches a conclusion.

Bamford's excellent form, which had seen him score six Premier League goals already this term, including an outstanding hat-trick in a 3-0 win at Aston Villa, promoted talk of a potential call-up and the United player following in the recent footsteps of team-mate Kalvin Phillips.

The midfielder, who made his England debut in September, is currently sidelined with a shoulder problem.

Bamford, 27, has previously represented England up to under-21 level.

On his squad - and also name-checking Bamford - Southgate said: "Both Callum Wilson and Patrick Bamford have done very well in the last few weeks for their clubs.

"We’re only a quarter of the way through the season; the next time we’re together, we’ll be three-quarters of the way through the season.

"There’s a lot of football to be played and a lot of opportunity for those players to press a claim while they’re playing with their clubs.”

“We just felt across the autumn we didn’t want to make too many changes to the squad. We have Harry (Kane), Dominic Calvert-Lewin played exceptionally well in his matches with us.

"Danny Ings unfortunately misses out this time (through injury) and we unfortunately haven’t really been able to give Tammy (Abraham) the game time we might have hoped last month so didn’t think it was right to leave him out at this stage - he’s played well in the last couple of games for his club, we know that he’s a player of high potential.

Manchester City's Phil Foden was recalled for the upcoming triple-header - but there was no room for Manchester United's Bradford-born forward Mason Greenwood.

The pair made their debuts in September's Group A2 opener against Iceland in Reykjavik, where they infuriated the Football Association by breaching UEFA's strict bio-bubble rules by meeting girls at the team hotel.
