Richard Keys issues strong response over Leeds United and West Brom promotion claims

Former Sky Sports presenter Richard Keys insists "it would be outrageous" to promote Leeds United and West Brom to the Premier League without finishing the 2019/20 season.

The Premier League and EFL agreed on a three-week suspension on Friday in light of the coronavirus outbreak but there are doubts over when or whether the season will resume.

A number of different outcomes have been discussed on social media, including promoting the current Championship top two and making it a 22-team top-flight season for 2020/21.

However, in his latest blog post called ‘Re-set the clock. It’s the only sensible thing to do’, Keys hit back at claims suggesting Leeds and the Baggies should be promoted if the current situation stays the same.

He said: "Leeds and West Brom have had eventful seasons, but they’re not up yet. Both can still be caught. So how can we promote them?

“It would be outrageous if those chasing play-off places were to miss out on the chance to get up. Bristol City, Millwall, Cardiff are all jockeying. So are Blackburn and Swansea.

“It’s one of the joys of Championship football that very little is ever settled until the last day of the season. Oh - and the football is pure. No VA-bloodyR spoiling matches."
