Either side of a 25-minute West Ham spell, the visitors were the better side, but the Hammers made that period count for them, with goals from Jesse Lingard, picking up the rebound from his missed penalty, and from Craig Dawson.
Chief football writer Stuart Rayner tries to make sense of the individual performances.
Illan Meslier – perhaps did not help the situation at the corner Leeds conceded from 6
Luke Ayling – his late cross should have created a goal but he also conceded the penalty on a disappointing night for him 5
Diego Llorente – a lovely pass to release Patrick Bamford but he twice lost out to Craig Dawson at corners 6
Liam Cooper – some good challenges and interception but again a vital mistake, conceding the foul which led to the opener 5
Stuart Dallas – added some real improvement to the midfield in the second half 7
Kalvin Phillips – a good return from a calf injury but his mistake started the move which ended in West Ham United's second 6
Helder Costa – blazed an early shot over but could hardly be blamed for his knee being a gnat's fingernail offside in creating what should have been the first goal 6
Tyler Roberts – another wasted opportunity of a performance from the young midfielder 5
Mateusz Klich – the midfielder has hit the buffers in 2021 5
Raphinha – Lukas Fabianski's save denied him a brilliant overhead kick goal, but he had only himself to blame for other missed opportunities 7
Patrick Bamford – some poor misses by the striker 5.
Jack Harrison (for Costa, 46) – sliced across a second-half shot 6
Ezgjan Alioski (for Klich, 46) – freed Dallas to move into midfield 5
Rodrigo (for Roberts, 60) – screamed his frustration at a second-half miss 6.
