The Yorkshire-based footballers who are affected by the postponement of Euro 2020 finals

FOR A select group of footballers across Yorkshire, their hopes of representing their countries at a major international tournament in June and July have been dashed by the postponement of the Euro 2020 finals for a year.

Fulfilling domestic footballing calendars will now take precedence, should football get underway again later this spring - or quite possibly the summer - following the coronavirus crisis.

Sheffield United and Leeds United players head the list of footballers who will not step out on the continental stage at finals time this summer, while there will also be a sense of disappointment for several players from other clubs - whose nations were involved in play-off matches which have now been postponed.

In total, as many as 23 players could have missed out in total on the international front this year at a major tournament.

Eight wear the club colours of Sheffield United, with John Egan, Enda Stevens and David McGoldrick all being current Republic of Ireland internationals, with Mick McCarthy's side facing a Euro 2020 semi-final qualifier in Slovakia at some point.

Dean Henderson was pushing for inclusion in Gareth Southgate's England finals squad, with many tipping him for involvement in the Three Lions' scheduled friendlies with Italy and Denmark ahead of their postponement - with England having already qualified.

Midfielders Mo Besic and Sander Berge are internationals for Bosnia and Herzegovina and Norway, due to face Northern Ireland and Serbia respectively in play-off semi-finals ahead of a final decider.

Oliver McBurnie and John Fleck are likely to have been in Scotland's plans for their scheduled semi-finals with Israel alongside Leeds United captain Liam Cooper, with the Sheffield Wednesday trio of Steven Fletcher, Barry Bannan and Liam Palmer also likely to have been in the thinking of Tartan Army chief Steve Clarke.

Kalvin Phillips was also being tipped as a potential 'gatecrasher' for international inclusion ahead of Euro 2020 with England, with team-mate Stuart Dallas being an integral member of the Northern Ireland squad.

Meanwhile, Leeds forward Tyler Roberts is a member of the Wales international squad, who have already qualified for the finals along with England without going through the play-offs.

Here is a full club-by-club list of Yorkshire-based players who could have been involved in Euro 2020 finals - including those who play for countries in play-offs.
