Matt Taylor will fit perfectly into Rotherham United habitat, believes Tony Stewart

Taylor was unveiled as Rotherham’s new manager on a four-year deal on Tuesday night and begins life in the Millers dugout at home to Millwall on Wednesday night.

Rotherham’s mid-table position in the Championship is the strongest it has been for many a year, hence the amount of interest from established managers.

But having seen rookie boss Paul Warne grow into a success over six years at the club, chairman Stewart wanted to ape that model.

And 40-year-old Taylor from Lancashire, who had taken Exeter up to League One in his first job in management, fitted that description.

“We knew what type of style, what type of character we wanted,” said Stewart, whose Millers have been in their New York Stadium home for a decade now.

"Matt fitted that description; young, athletic, his win-ratio is very good.

“I interviewed Matt and after a couple of minutes you knew he was the man to come to Rotherham.

“Some big names were interested, some I would have taken seriously six years ago.

"But the stereotype of the guy we were looking for, Matt fitted into that role.

“Exeter had survived on a shoe string. At Rotherham we are a family, we are close-knit, we do work together, we laugh together, we cry together.

"Matt will fit into this habitat.”
